Thrift Store Finds: Book And Comics

I found a horror book and eight comics at one thrift store this morning. The book was I Am Frankenstein by C. Dean Andersson (Zebra Books, 1996) that I picked up for fifty cents (yellow tags were half price today).

The seven comics that I picked up at the same store for a dollar each include The Computer Masters of Metropolis (a Radio Shack giveaway featuring Superman and Wonder Woman), Flash Gordon #36 (Western/Whitman, 1981), A-Next #2, Iron Man #9, Incredible Hulk #466, Spider-Man, Fire-Star and Iceman (advertising supplement to The Denver Post in 1983), X-Men: Liberators #3 and Disney's Return To Oz (Scholastic, 1985). The Radio Shack giveaway comic has seen better days since the covers are torn at the bottom and are hanging on by one staple. The Flash Gordon and Dallas Post giveaway are in worn condition but the other comics are in fair shape.

At another thrift store, I found a battered copy of Devil Kids #90 featuring Hot Stuff the Little Devil for thirty cents. Not only are the covers worn and stained but three-fourths of the last ad page has been ripped out. Some one must have ordered the Sea-Monkeys. It has been a while since I last read a Harvey comic so I just to pick it up. I used to pick up anything with Hot Stuff and Richie Rich before I hit my teens.

Today was a great day for this comic fan to hit the thrift stores.

Post Super Heroes Mini Comics And Game Cards

In 1980, Post cereal offered mini comics featuring DC Super Heroes in their cereal boxes. The only cereal that I remember getting them in is Super Sugar Crisp. I would have been fifteen at the time when this came out in the stores.

There were four mini comics in the set with each having sixteen pages. I managed to get a complete set plus an extra one featuring the Super Heroes. Each measure 3 1/4" x 4 1/4" (however, there were some that not cut exactly to size). The mini comics include Super Heroes (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Robin) in "The Secret of the Sinister Lighthouse!", Batman in "The Joker's Last Laugh!", Superman in "Terra-Man's Skyway Robbery!" and Wonder Woman in "The Angle Menace!" There really should have been a fifth mini comic featuring Aquaman since he is featuring in "The Secret of the Sinister Lighthouse!" Robin is not only in the Super Heroes adventure but also in the Batman one.

Each of the mini comics came with a instant winner game card. The game cards measure 2 1/2" x 3 1/4". There are six stars that you must scratch off and match with the top star. The prizes included a trip to Hollywood, bicycle, kite, comic book and flying disc. The prize box is located in the lower right hand corner and none of mine were winners. What I like about these game cards is that not only does the big guns appear but also some Golden Age super heroes like Dr. Mid-Nite, Flash and Green Lantern. Batgirl and Captain Marvel also appear. I did find it odd that the Riddler is one of my game cards. I do not five game cards because I remember getting two featuring Robin at the top (I either used it for something else or tossed it).

Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery #25 and Wonder Woman #188

You may wonder what these two comics have in common. Other than the fact that both were originally sold for fifteen cents, they have nothing in common. However, I did find them at the first local community flea market this morning. There are not very many flea markets around here so I try to go to all that I can. Most of the vendors that usually sell "homemade" candles, jewelry, perfume and soap at the local craft stores were there. I found one table that had about a dozen comics spread out. Most were Disney comics that were around ten dollars. I did find Gold Key's Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery #25 (March 1969) and DC Comics' Wonder Woman #188 (May-June 1970) for two dollars each. They are in fair condition and I was surprised to find them for that price. I have three very worn copies of Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery #66, 73 and 76 while my oldest Wonder Woman issue is #250 from 1978. Here are the covers:
