Christmas 2008 DVD Loot

For Christmas, I received the following DVDs: The Dark Knight, The Best of Howdy Doody, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. For those who do not know of Howdy Doody, he was freckle-faced boy marionette that hosted a children's television program along with the very human, Buffalo Bob Smith, from 1947 until 1960 in the United States. I was born five years too late to enjoy the show but I have always enjoyed vintage tv series. My first exposure to him was on the episode of Happy Days when Ritchie entered a Howdy Doody lookalike contest so he can get a photo of Clarabell the Clown without his makeup. I already have a DVD that has a few episodes of Howdy Doody on another DVD.

Eartha Kitt Passes On

Eartha Kitt, who replaced Julie Newmar on tv's Batman, died December 25, 2008 at the age of 81 from colon cancer. She is also known for her saucy song, Santa Baby. For me, Eartha Kitt was the best Catwoman.

Here is part one of The Funny Feline Felonies from the Batman tv series:

Elvira's Haunted Holidays

I know I posted Elvira's House of Mystery Special #1 from DC Comics as 2008 Halloween Countdown Day 16 but I am posting the comic book again with links to the larger pictures this time as a special Christmas present from Moongem Comics.

DC Comics Christmas Card By The Kotzebue Bros.

The following DC Comics Christmas card by the Kotzebue Bros. features several members of the Justice League of America along with Robin and Supergirl. Notice that Aquaman is actually having fun while Batman is miffed about getting hit with a snowball. Yes, you can click on the image below for a larger version.

Supergirl Celebrating Christmas Double Feature

Al Rio did the artwork of Supergirl celebrating Christmas in two different costumes on a series of postcards (click below for larger images). I love the second costume the best due to the long red gloves and boots with white fur trim.

Justice League Of America Celebrating Christmas

An actual plate featuring the Justice League of America celebrating Christmas as drawn by Alex Ross. I like how Batman is peeking in the window while the Martian Manhunter is clinking glasses with Red Tornado. Aquaman seems either bored or standoffish.

Captain Marvel Christmas Card

I really like this Christmas card featuring Captain Marvel as drawn by Jeff Smith in 2003. Check out the boots of Atom, Aquaman, Batman, Superman and Red Tornado hanging above the fireplace. The Sandman clock is pretty cool too.

Women Wrestling Wednesday Webcomic Alert: Rival Angels

Rival Angels follows Sabrina "Ultragirl" Mancini and her three roommates as they become worthy women wrestlers of the world. The story is more behind the scenes so you will get an insight on their personal journey outside the square ring. The web comic is drawn and written by Alan Evans aka albone. A new strip is added every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The artwork is clean and the characters are very interesting. I still have a lot of the web comic to catch up on but I enjoyed what I have read so far. So if you enjoy women wrestling, be sure to check out Rival Angels.

Women Wrestling Wednesday: Batgirl vs Black Canary

Yes, two Birds of Prey battle it out in the square ring thanks to pepeloco999 and his mad gaming skills. Batgirl's long red hair and Black Canary's black fishnet stockings is sure to get your blood pumping during this recent cold snap.

Vampirella Christmas Motorcycle

I am out of Christmas artwork by Nick Powell but I do have another with Vampirella in a holiday pose. The weather is still cold here but snow is falling so I need something to warm me up again. The following art has Vampirella sitting on a motorcycle while holding Santa's head.

I Want Vampirella For Christmas

We are having a blast of sub-zero wind chills today so I figured that Vampirella decked out for Christmas would help warm things up. The artwork by Nick Powell is at least warming me up.

Supergirl's Alternate Santa Costume

Nick Powell was actually more creative with Sugergirl's alternate Santa costume. Her top, mini-skirt and cape actually matches the hat complete with the white fur trim. I love the white snake in diamond symbol (that's the S shield for those not in the know). I actually like this one better of the two.

Van Johnson Passes On

Van Johnson, who played the Minstrel on tv's Batman, died December 12, 2008 at the age of 92. His career spanned six decades and he appeared in a wide range of movies from comedy to war.

Bettie Page Passes On

Fetish model and pin-up queen of the 1950s, Bettie Page aka Betty Page, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the age of 85. She was the girlfriend of Cliff Secord aka The Rocketeer in the comic book created by Dave Stevens (he later would meet and help her). In 1991, Betty Page In 3-D was published by the 3-D Zone. Dark Horse published the following two one shots: Bettie Page Comics (1996) and Bettie Page Comics Spicy Adventure (1997). They pubished a three-issue mini-series in 2000 titled Queen of the Nile that featured her (the issues were collected in a trade paperback with the same name).

Women Wrestling Wednesday: Catwoman vs Black Cat

Seems only fitting to have the cat women from DC Comics and Marvel Comics duking it out since I posted the Black Cat Christmas art yesterday. The following video featuring Catwoman vs Black Cat was made with Smackdown vs Raw 2008 and pcsx2 0.9.5 and a hacked GSdx graphics plugin.

Goodnight Forrest J Ackerman

Forrest J Ackerman, founding editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland and the man who termed sci fi, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2008 from heart failure according to Yahoo News, Mark Evenier and Jon's Random Acts of Goodness. I first read the news at the Jon's blog before reading Mark's blog. I still have most of my issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland stashed away and I have fond memories of them. So I would just like to thank Forrest J Ackerman for everything he did.

Blog Alert: The Aquaman Shrine

I really should have started this series of posts writing about The Aquaman Shrine since Rob writes about one of the most underrated superheroes at DC Comics. You will find everything dealing with the King of the Seven Seas from ads to Pogs. The current post spotlights two Aquaman-related covers redone by Fred Hembeck.

Hawkgirl Action Figure

The only action figure from the Justice League line that I actually broke down and bought new was Hawkgirl and she is still in her original package. What I really enjoy about the package is her name in Spanish which is Chica Halcon. I had to move the Hawkgirl action figure from one wall to another to make room for something else so I took some pictures while she was down.

Batman Giant Comics To Color

My copy of the Batman and Robin Battle the Joker in "The Comedy of Tears" Giant Comics To Color has not aged well. I probably should not have taken the back cover off to hang on my wall back in 1975. I was ten years old then and never dreamed that I would one day be posting a few pictures of the giant coloring book on something called the Internet. I only colored about half of the pages and the pages are really yellow. I did fool around with the saturation on the coloring pages to show the actual artwork.

I am only presenting the cover and the first three pages but you can click them for larger images:

Check out the official Batman: The Brave and the Bold website from Cartoon Network. My favorite feature is the Inter-Action Figures, which is like a digital version of Colorforms. There is also a game based on the popular tv cartoon.

Women Wrestling Wednesday: Supergirl vs Dark Mary Marvel

I'm starting a new weekly feature here called Women Wrestling Wednesday. The posts will feature videos of women wrestling. However, these videos have a twist in that they feature comic book characters brought to the ring thanks to various video games. Supergirl vs. Dark Mary Marvel starts the ball rolling and is made possible by Smackdown vs Raw 2008.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Rise of the Blue Beetle

"Rise of the Blue Beetle" was the first episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold that debuted on the Cartoon Network on Friday, November 14, 2008. The beginning had Batman and Green Arrow facing the Clock King. He then teams up with the new Blue Beetle to help save an alien race from Kanjar Ro. I liked the Silver Age feel of the art and story. I highly recommend Batman: The Brave and the Bold to all bat-fans.

Justice League of America 1997 Pilot Movie

You can watch the Justice League of America CBS tv movie from 1997 featuring Ice, Barry Allen (Flash), Guy Gardner (Green Lantern), Fire, Ray Palmer (Atom) and the Martian Manhunter battling the Weatherman in nine parts starting with this one:

This looks more like it should have been made in 1987. The costumes, plot and special effects are so bad that they make the movies on the Sci Fi Channel look great. The only redeeming factor is that the movie never aired in the US and a weekly tv series never actually materialized.

I just found out that you can sign-up for the free newsletter and receive your free ebook, The Devil's Rescue by L. Ron Hubbard, as well as three posters with fully restored, original art from the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction. The posters features dames, damsels and buccaneers.

Alexz Johnson To Play Saturn Girl On Smallville

Good news for Legion fans: Alexz Johnson set for SMALLVILLE's Saturn Girl. The Canadian actress/singer/songwriter is known for her roles in Final Destination 3 and So Weird as well as the leading role of Jude Harrison in the Canadian tv series, Instant Star. The "Legion" episode will be written by Geoff Johns and introduce the Legion of the Super-Heroes to the tv series.

DC Comics To End Robin, Nightwing And Birds Of Prey In February 2009

Robin, Nightwing and Birds of Prey to End in February was news that I was not expecting. The final issues will be Robin #183, Nightwing #153 and Birds of Prey #127. DC Comics declined to comment on exactly why the three Batman-related comic books were canceled. I enjoyed both series on and off since they started. I just hope that a new comic series with Damian Wayne as the new Robin does not happen.

Breaking News: Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander No More On Heroes

According to Variety's Heroes duo get the ax, Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander have been fired as co-executive producers of the tv series. Seems that NBC is not too happy about the ratings and the hefty budget overruns of this season.

2008 Halloween Countdown 31 Bonus: Happy Halloween

This should be my last Halloween post for this year. There are a few Elvira items that I have that I did not post about like the model car and Johnny Lightning die-cast cars. First, I would like to thank John Rozum, who has been doing a Halloween Countdown for three years. Secondly, I would like to thank all the participants of Halloween Countdown. Thirdly, I would like to thank all those that posted here especially Jay Amabile from The Sexy Armpit, Darius Whiteplume from Adventures In Nerdliness, Gunther Dedmund from The Basement Sublet of Horror and Reis O'Brien from Geek Orthodox. Finally, a big shout out to Jon Knutson from Jon's Random Acts of Geekery, who inspired me to do my first Halloween Countdown.

I'm giving out boxes of Marvel Hero Candy Sticks this year as part of my Halloween grab bag (each bag has six to seven pieces of candy including M&Ms, Pieces Reeses, Twixes, Kit Kats, Almond Joys, Star Bursts and suckers). Each box has two candy sticks that are one and half inches long and made mostly of sugar, corn starch and corn syrup. The bag of sixty features Hulk, Spider-Man and X-Men but none of the boxes have the Hulk on them. Three boxes have Spider-Man on front and back. One box has Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four on one side and the Thing on the other. The Thing has a box with him on both sides as does the Human Torch. Cyclops and Wolverine each has a box to represent the X-Men. Strange that none of the boxes themselves had the Hulk on them.

Here are the pictures of the Marvel Hero Candy Sticks bag and boxes:

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.

2008 Halloween Countdown 31: Elvira Greeting Cards

I was lucky enough to find three Elvira greeting cards at a local supermarket that Hallmark put out back in the late 1980s. I'm not sure how many were actually released but here are the scanned images:
